A Volunteer from Samoa

I really do not know if Samoa is considered as a cheap international travel destination. But my interest in the country was picked when I met a volunteer from Samoa. I am also a volunteer in our community and what surprises me is when this Samoan volunteer speaks my language fluently that I could. He has terms and vocabulary that is so deep that I can not help but ask from where he is.

Samoa Turtles

Then when I visited a college friend; I was so enthralled by the beautiful beaches and pictures that he took of a place and not knowing that it is Samoa. The similarity of Samoa and our country is great. Perhaps the difference lies in the fact that it belongs in the other parts of the globe.

Samoa is a good volunteer abroad destination. The people welcome volunteers like family. We know that Samoa has just been devastated by calamities in the recent years. Thus, it is only but befitting to help this nation build its life again.

Volunteer who is looking for a destination should also considered this beautiful country. Samoa is composed of 9 islands. These islands are great destinations for adventure activities during free time. You can surf the ocean Samoan style as the Pacific Ocean kisses the country’s reef.

Spas are also present in the many islands. For these islands became the refuge of fatigue and tired people. The scene being offered to them for free is indeed a cut out from heaven. Volunteer placements abroad in Samoa are varied and huge. If you seek certain volunteer destination then Samoa is sure to have something for you.

One dreamed activity by the volunteers in Samoa is to swim with turtles. The country is gifted with hundreds and thousands of these beautiful and slow creatures.

When a Volunteer Addresses Women Issues

I was searching for a volunteer program, then I stumbled upon an article about a teacher volunteer in Uganda who went to propose an Afri-pad. They said that they were sewing reusable sanitary pads. The issue here is that female secondary students are absent from 3 to 7 days a month due to their menstruation. For the fact that they can not afford to buy sanitary pads thus they prefer to stay home during their monthly period. One pack of sanitary pads usually cost them 2000 Uganda shilling.

Volunteer for WomenThus a teaching volunteer with some efforts has come up with a project and donation scheme to give the Ugandian women the chance of making their own reusable sanitary pads out from a fleece. Fleece is a term for a soft fabric.

The women and girls in Uganda showed great joy in receiving kits for making their own sanitary pads. I remember making reusable sanitary napkins out from soft cloth and using them. They are good. Thus this teaching volunteer had made a little yet significant contributions in Ugandian women.

Right after a day’s volunteer work the volunteers would usually enjoy the sight in Uganda. They know the country has so many possibilities as soon as they touch down and saw the view of Lake Victoria. That alone took their hearts away.

As the home of the Gorilla, Uganda has already received thousands of guests. Those who are excited to visit the domain of the apes to those who would like to experience the beauty of Lake Victoria.

Everyday is a challenging day for the volunteers but at the end of each project lays the fact that the surroundings welcome them with great beauty. The free safari, which they can enjoy right after work, is already a gift. A volunteer can have every sight to his liking during break days.

Will You Take the heat, Volunteer?

An international volunteer is one brave soldier. Soldier whose only armor is the goodness in the heart and the willingness to help others across the globe. Volunteering across the borders can be a rewarding experience depending on the personality that goes with every individual. You have to remember that as an individual you have your expectations at your back as soon as you start your commitment as a volunteer.

 Lonely International Volunteer

It is a difficult experience when you go to other countries with a different culture, different language, and different custom and different people. Volunteer programs are meant for patient and flexible people. You will encounter so many inefficiencies with your volunteer program. You should expect the unexpected.

There are so many things that are happening in volunteer overseas that you need an open mind and an open heart. You need to see things in another perspective. For a volunteer program is seen as a study program. This time you study the culture and the people’ ways first hand. You do not need to read them and you need to experience them. And the best thing to do is fit into all these new things. You are one good volunteer if you are able to jump in to band wagon and enjoy the ride.

As a volunteer you expect to change people as soon as you instruct them and most found out that they can not. For the factors that you are against into are huge and already rooted in the system. So curb your expectations a little and enjoy what you are doing during your volunteer abroad.

Volunteer abroad and work overseas has some similarities and differences. Being a volunteer is in a new level. You are working and no being paid. You are working for a common good. You are working to help a community or an individual. But sometimes you are frustrated that the locals do not see your way.

It is up to you if you can take the heat as an international volunteer.

Medical Volunteer and Language Immersion

Volunteer to work abroad and learn a language? This idea is totally inverted. You should learn a language first before you go for a medical volunteer abroad. Your medical volunteer abroad should be a waste of time when you go directly with out a little brush up with the language.

Could you imagine yourself telling something to your patient and your patient kind of look at you as if you came from mars? You may be kind of telling them some minor thing and they took up seriously and everything just went out of place.

First you as a medical volunteer and those other kind of volunteers should learn the language first before you pack up your bag and embark on a free volunteer work abroad. Why? So that you can get the most of your volunteer work. You will not enjoy your volunteer work if by chance you will not understand anything that the locals says.

Yes your medical volunteer mission can be a great and good way of a language immersion. For if you just learn the basics of the language then definitely you will learn more than that when you alrady interact with the locals.

Medical volunteers to countries who speaks the Spanish language is the ‘in’ thing this year. But they all put it the wrong way. They all say ” Volunteer Work Abroad and Learn Spanish “. Let me emphasize that it should be the other way around. You should learn the Spanish language first to be able to do most of your volunteer work abroad.

The Spanish countries are the target of most of the medical volunteers for it offers a rich destination for either a paid volunteer work abroad or not. Besides the fact that they had a very beautiful region and beautiful places to visit while you are there.

My Choice to Go Volunteer Abroad

EgyptI really do not see the rationale when people go abroad then they pay for the fair and all the expenses that goes with it. They pay expensively to work and help their build their homes. Is this a practical decision making? Is this what the world really needs? Or is this just also another mediocre attempt to help others.

The answers:

Yes the world needs volunteers abroad. Other people also need the help of other people. No man is an island. That also applies to the wealthiest nation. These nations – though are financially capable of existing without the help of other nations still needs the existence of other poor countries.

No it is not a mediocre attempt to help others. Volunteers are of so many kinds. Some volunteers usually pay for their fare and expenses as they travel. It’s like paying for a travel abroad but this time you do not see the sights but you help the life of others in some way.

Some volunteer professional are sponsored by organizations when they volunteer abroad to help others. Some doctors coming from the west come to developing countries with their travel expenses paid. Professionals like engineers and real estate valuation experts are needed in certain countries and they volunteer for some projects in the developing country without pay.

My choice to go work abroad and spend for my travel expenses is a well thought of decision and not a haphazard kind of decision making. I volunteered for the reasons that I wanted to share my skills and somebody out there in the whole wide world needs my skills and would appreciate it.

Thus my choice to go to developing countries such as Egypt and Ecuador are really dream of a woman who wants to share in a race different from her own.

Bridge the Differences through Volunteer Abroad Program

Volunteer Abroad Host FamilySome volunteer abroad programs entails that some students will have to be housed in a host family. This is where you bridge the difference. This time you will meet somebody who came from other culture and got to live and learn the similarities and differences.

Some host families accept volunteer teens that came from different countries and even as far as Mexico. Adrianne who came from Chihuahua, Mexico was accepted in an American family- Taylor. The Taylor never knew anything about Chihuaha except that it is a breed of the dog. But it was surprising that it is the name of a certain place in Mexico.

But with the help of Adrianne, the Taylor family did not only point the certain location of Chihuahua in the map but also certain interesting facts about the state.

  • Chihuahua may mean the capital state in the Northern part of Mexico.
  • Norteno food is very famous in this state capital which consists of chilies, beef and cheese.
  • If you are looking for a pedestrian friendly place in Mexico, Chihuahua can fill in the post with certain degree of pride.
  • Chihuahua’s weather has a slight difference with the United States weather in that it is very hot with 40 degrees temperature during summer while the US has still a milder temperature. It is also very cold in Chihuahua during the winter. It snows during this season, perhaps once or twice a year.
  • Spanish is the language spoken in Chihuahua. That makes Adrianne a favorite among the Taylor’s family for he taught them the language and with their assignments with their foreign language- Spanish.

Involving yourself in a volunteer program does not mean only that you physically travel around the world. For that is an impossibility if you have your toddlers and family with you. But housing a volunteer makes a total difference. You are learning a different culture first without going out of your house.

Travel that Enriches the Soul

There are so many kinds of travels abroad from the simple pleasure, business and vacation travel to the spiritual travels. Yet there are travels that have touch the lives of the travelers. There are great meanings when you do something that has help other person. Helping people does not have to mean only on the financial basis but of so many things.

When you teach one child to read and discern different letters and their sounds. You did not only help him to survive and love education. When you help the child realizes his potentials you did not only extend help for a day but also help him build his future. The education system due to poor implementation of the teaching principles snuff offs the child natural learning instinct. Why? Imagine teaching 75 children in one hour and you will realize that both the teacher and the child have difficulty due to the ratio between teacher and student problem.

There are rare idealist who went to volunteer abroad to change the outlook of a certain community and village. If not the whole culture system at least make a little impact and change. They are those who went to help truly.

Travel that enriches the soul involves an opening of the mind and heart to new culture and to another kind of community and thinking. Those who wanted to do this should be knowledgeable and mature enough to accept the kind of decision making that the people in your destination usually have.

Even just subtly showing your love to children during you volunteer abroad is already a big deal for the children who watched you with such idolization. You just give them a new piece of pencil already means a lot to these children. You just give them your time and they will be very glad and happy.
