This kind of volunteer program is usually a non profit organization and mostly they work for at communities and even build partnership with the families that needs home. This kind of organization mostly needs volunteers that can help them in building homes and also by achieving their goal in the number of shelter that they are going to built for a number of families. The families that they have partnership with are chosen through applications and based on the level of need for the shelter.

In applying for this volunteer program, is easy as one two three, you don’t need to have an experience or skills in building homes you just have to have the passion and the dedication in your volunteer work. There are also other volunteers who have the same intention as you have that can contribute to the building of the shelters. Recently, some of these organizations have had their share of help in the building shelters around the world, examples of it would be in Myanmar, China and the US Gulf Coast. In Myanmar, due to the cyclone that hit the country, they have reconstructed and also built shelters that are for long term. And also in the Sichuan Province in China, they have had reconstruction of the homes and other infrastructures in the province after it was hit by an earthquake. Also in the US Gulf Coast, where it was damaged by the Hurricane Katrina, they have included cleaning up, counseling, and documenting human stories about what has happened aside from rebuilding the homes of the people living there.

“How do you describe the color red to a blind child?” The echoes of my past seem to haunt every fiber of my ambition. That was a question asked by my gaunt looking professor in my Psychology class ten long years ago. And until now I was at a lost on how indeed to describe such wonderful color to an innocent blind child.

It made me think how indeed blind people would appreciate the beautiful colors that natures seems so abundant of! That was the first step I took when I volunteered to work abroad for free for a group of blind people. I may not be able to explain the colors of blue, red, yellow, pink but I could do a lot to help these people learn the English language.

I am imagining of future days wherein these children would be living as normal working people inside a call center, university, working as interpreters, call center agent, or even teachers as long as they mastered the art of communicating English. And taking into account that they speak their native tongue well- Spanish language- would mean great chances for them globally.

I was lucky enough to be holding a class as a volunteer teacher of grown up blind people in Mexico. These high school children indeed are taught how to polish their English. They are Spanish speaking people.

A year in Madrid before this volunteer opportunity indeed has a lot to do to fulfill this ambition of mine to teach English in a Spanish speaking country. My Spanish course in Madrid is the mere reason why I was hired for it is very needed to communicate with these blind Spanish speaking students of mine.

I can never describe red to a blind child but I could teach a blind child the difference between a noun and a pronoun. And that is important for me at this time.
